“The Beat Goes On” is more than a title, it is a declaration.

This deeply personal retrospective marks Gwynne Debnam’s first solo exhibition since 2008, bringing together decades of creative work shaped by endurance, reflection, and an unwavering commitment to art. Originally planned for 2022, the exhibition was postponed as Gwynne faced one of her greatest challenges: a five-hour open-heart surgery during the height of the pandemic. Now realised, the exhibition stands as a testament to her strength and determination.

Spanning textiles, printmaking, and mixed media, the works in “The Beat Goes On” trace a life lived in close dialogue with both hardship and beauty. Gwynne’s practice is grounded in the rhythms of everyday life: observations of people, moments, and environments , while also drawing deeply from the healing power of nature. The sun, surf, and ocean are constant inspirations, offering a sense of calm, resilience, and renewal.

Alongside these larger works, Gwynne’s handmade cards offer a more intimate insight into her creative process. Made from scraps of textiles and fragments of earlier artworks, and often embellished with found feathers, these pieces embody her ability to reimagine and renew. These works reflect her instinct to find beauty in what remains, transforming overlooked materials into objects of quiet meaning.

Now, after a lifetime of creating, teaching, and giving to others, Gwynne invites audiences into her story. This exhibition is not just a look back—it is a celebration of continuing forward.
Because through it all, the beat goes on.

Join us for Gwynne Debnam’s exhibition, running from Wednesday 1 April to Tuesday 28 April.
