Clarice Beckett

Clarice Beckett is celebrated for her misty evocations of Melbourne and remembered for her tragically short life. Long overlooked by the art establishment due to her association with the controversial art theorist Max Meldrum, she nonetheless held twelve solo exhibitions between 1923 and 1933. After her death, much of her work was stored in a dilapidated shed, where at least two-thirds was lost to weather damage before the remaining works were rediscovered in 1971.

Andrew Gaynor has researched Beckett since the early 2000s, retracing her routes and identifying the exact locations of many of her paintings, particularly around her home suburb of Beaumaris. He is a writer, researcher and freelance curator specialising in Australian modernism, with curatorial experience at major Australian institutions.
