Murray Arts congratulates local arts advocate, educator and community leader Margaret (Margie) Gleeson on being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List for her service to the arts.

A familiar and respected figure across the Border region’s creative community, Margie has dedicated decades to supporting arts, culture and creative development through education, governance, community leadership and volunteer service. The honour recognises a lifetime of contribution to the cultural life of the region and beyond.

The citation acknowledges Margie’s extensive involvement across the arts sector, including her current role as a Board Member of HotHouse Theatre, her work with Arts Yackandandah, and her longstanding involvement with Border Music Camp. The honours listing also recognises her previous service as a Board Member of Murray Arts and her role as founder of Breaking New Ground, an initiative supporting creative development and community engagement.

Throughout her career, Margie has been a passionate advocate for the arts as a driver of education, community connection and regional development. Many local artists, students and arts organisations have benefited from her mentorship, leadership and unwavering commitment to nurturing creative opportunities in regional communities.

As a former Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts at Albury High School and lecturer at Charles Sturt University, Margie has helped inspire generations of creative practitioners while championing the value of arts education. Her contributions extend well beyond the classroom, with significant involvement in theatre, music, visual arts and community cultural initiatives across the region.

The Medal of the Order of Australia is one of the nation’s highest civilian honours and recognises Australians who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and fields of endeavour.

Murray Arts extends its sincere congratulations to Margie on this well-deserved recognition and thanks her for the lasting impact she has had on the arts and cultural life of our region.
