In this innovative re-imagining of Shakespeare’s timeless tale, Romeo & Juliet presents a fusion of classical technique, contemporary athleticism and immersive staging that elevates the tragic romance to new heights.
Podesta honours the play’s emotional core — youthful passion, forbidden love and feuding families — while embedding modern movement vocabulary, cinematic lighting and dramatic ensemble work. Across the piece, couples move in tension and release, walls of opposition give way to intimate connection and the iconic balcony scene is re-interpreted with bold partnering and fluid space.

Since its premiere, Romeo & Juliet has journeyed across stages both nationally and internationally, marking itself as a significant addition to Podesta’s choreographic oeuvre and a compelling experience for modern audiences.

Dancers are challenged with a full range of expression — from visceral ensemble passages to tender solos — operate within an intricate design framework that features film projection, live music and striking visual contrasts. This is storytelling where movement, stagecraft and emotion collide; the result is both elegant and electrifying.

With Romeo & Juliet, Podesta continues to push the boundaries of contemporary ballet, crafting a production that appeals to purists and new audiences alike. The work stands as a testament to his commitment to innovation, dramatic clarity and the transformative potential of dance.
