Australian artist Hugh Ramsay (1877-1906) is recognised as one of Australia’s significant portraitists with art works on display in the major Art Galleries of Australia – one may visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales to see Ramsay’s ‘Two Sisters’ painting – but who knows this was one of his works he completed whilst convalescing at Burrabunnia, Barnawartha in 1904.
Whilst working as an artist in Europe, Ramsay contracted tuberculosis and ill health forced his return to Australia. At the suggestion of his friend Nellie Melba he spent time at Burrabunnia where it was believed the climate would be beneficial to his failing health. Ramsay’s other art works whilst at Burrabunnia included ‘Burrabunnia,’ ‘Farm Road, Barnawartha,’ ‘Lady with a fan,’ as well as ‘The Two Sisters, aka ‘Two girls in white.’
And thanks to a generous donation the Chiltern Athenaeum also have some of Ramsay’s artwork completed during his time at Burrabunnia, on display at the museum.
On the 10th of October Mr Ron Ramsey, former Director of the Newcastle Art Gallery is visiting the Athenaeum to give a presentation on Ramsay and his works, a date not to be missed.
This presentation is to be held at the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum, 57 Conness Street, Chiltern. 2pm Saturday 10 October, 2026, and afternoon tea will be provided. Cost is $15 per head, with free entry to Chiltern Athenaeum Members. Limited seating, so bookings are essential – Obtain tickets by emailing info@chilternathenaeum.com.au
