Critically Acclaimed Scenes from the Climate Era Comes to Albury-Wodonga

HotHouse Theatre is excited to present Scenes from the Climate Era, a strikingly original production from acclaimed Australian writer and game developer David Finnigan, running from 7 to 10 May 2025 at the Butter Factory Theatre.

Produced by Belvoir St Theatre, this bold and thought-provoking play places environmental change centre stage, offering a kaleidoscopic exploration of the climate crisis through more than 50 vivid, fast-paced scenes.

Directed by Carissa Licciardello, Scenes from the Climate Era immerses audiences in a near-future shaped by environmental upheaval: mirror clouds, artificial reefs, global travel in a post-aeroplane world, and even zombie mice. From scenes of quiet intimacy to sweeping spectacle, the work captures the complexity of living in our rapidly changing world.

The production has been met with widespread acclaim:

  • “An invigoratingly honest portrayal of what it’s like to engage with climate change conversations (and be alive!) right this second.” – Limelight Magazine
  • “Raw, vulnerable and utterly engaging.” – The AU Review
  • “The world’s biggest story, told in 50 plays over 80 minutes.” – The Guardian
  • “Intelligent, affecting and deeply human… a dizzying mosaic.” – Time Out

Finnigan, known for his collaborations across science, policy and performance, describes the work as “a snapshot of some of the contours of this new world,” drawn from stories shared by colleagues in climate research, activism, and beyond.

“It’s also an invitation,” he explains. “Because we can’t navigate this new world by ourselves. So, we’re inviting you for a conversation, to help us figure out: what is this new planet we’ve found ourselves on? And how are we going to get through it?”

“The play begins by meeting most of us where we are – caught between the idea that climate change will either be solved or lead us to apocalypse. Scene by scene, it offers something more complex and therefore truer,” says Director Carissa Licciardello. “It takes us through dread, beauty, fascination and laughter. It offers us a new way of seeing, and therefore coping, and therefore living.”

“We’re proud to bring this acclaimed production to our region and to offer audiences a chance to engage with the climate crisis in a way that’s intelligent, moving, and at times unexpectedly joyful,” says HotHouse CEO, Terese Casu.

HotHouse Theatre will also host several special events alongside the production:

  • La Trobe Conversations (8 May, 6:15 pm): A pre-show panel exploring the ideas behind the play
  • Meet the Artists (9 May): Post-show Q&A with the cast and creative team
  • Green Matinee (10 May, 2:00 pm): Encouraging patrons to attend sustainably via carpool, bike, or public transport

HotHouse Theatre invites audiences to experience this exhilarating, unsettling, and unexpectedly uplifting work – a theatrical reflection of the times we live in, and the futures we are yet to shape.
