Hello

Winter is here and it's a bit of de-ja-June with the COVID situation. We've been here before and probably will be again, but these challenging times show just how resilient and relevant the arts are to all our communities across the region. Throughout the restrictions, artists and creativity have kept us entertained, connected and helped us to heal.

In May we held our AGM and welcomed new board members and have a new chair. Read more about the AGM in this newsletter.

We also held our first Art>Work Creative Development residency near Corowa, where artists and mentors were brought together to create new work, develop ideas and connect with each other.  The project was a Murray Arts Initiative funded as part of the Create NSW Arts Restart program.

We hope you keep warm and remember to keep in touch with us via email and socials.

Murray Arts AGM

On 22nd May our Annual General Meeting was held at Burraja Gallery in Albury.
The meeting resulted in a change of Chairperson and a new board member. Tahni Froudist has been the Chairperson since 2015 and has resigned from the position and the board. We want to thank Tahni for her commitment, passion and expertise in arts administration and wish her all the best.

Congratulations to Richard Hull, CEO Flying Fruit Fly Circus who was elected our new Chairperson and we welcomed Michael Moran, Curator MAMA, to the board.

We also presented our Annual Report and 2020 It's a Wrap video. It was so wonderful to reflect on how much we achieved in the region given the challenges of bushfires and COVID.

Art>Work

In May, we held our first Art >Work  artist residency at Oakleigh Hideaway at Hopefield, near Corowa. The residency hosted artists and mentors from the Murray Arts region over 4 sunny days at a peaceful rural retreat. Artists used their time to connect with other practitioners from our region, create and explore works and ideas in a distraction-free environment.

We are thrilled that all the participating artists had such an enriching, engaging and productive experience. The project is a Murray Arts initiative, supported by the Create NSW Arts Restart program.

Congratulations!

Albury writer, Robyne Young will release a new collection of short stories later this year, thanks to a Booranga Writers Centre micro grant of $1,000.

Robyne was successful in applying for the funding from Create NSW. The small grant program for individuals was intended to restart literary activity in the regions after the social tumult of pandemic lockdowns.

‘I’m really thrilled to receive the funding which will cover the costs to engage award winning artist, Vernon Bartlett to create the cover artwork, and go toward self-publishing costs. I’ll be learning more about newer platforms to self- publish and will be able to pass that knowledge onto other writers in the region.’

She’ll also be experimenting with format and the collection will have a number of previously published short stories interspersed with micro-fiction.

Murray Arts is Watching

Art Works on iView

ABC has a new show which explores a range of arts across Australia. Each episode has several stories each uncovering and interrogating different art practices through interviews with artists and arts workers. Much like the format of BTN (Behind the News) it's light-hearted and there's no jargon, just easy to understand explanations and insights.

My favourite story so far is in Episode 4 where a blind date unfolds at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). Each person was given a set of cards which had identical words of feelings and descriptions and the daters would walk around and look at the artworks and chat about what they thought it meant and how it made them feel then they'd pull out a card and see if the other had similar reaction. What a great idea! Much better idea and location than a pub and strained conversation!

Check it out on Wednesday at 8.30PM or iView
