Hello

Well this time a year ago I was writing our March Newsletter 2020 marveling at the rain that felt like a massive relief after the horrendous bushfires that summer. Little did we know that only a couple of weeks later we'd be packing up the Murray Arts office and working from home for the next year. COVID has no doubt impacted us in many ways that we still may not fully comprehend for years to come and it's changed how we work interact and create and I've been proud how we've all banded together to get through a whole year and continue to get through. I was grateful for the online workshops that we were able to both host and participate in. They were a great way to connect, check in and learn during lockdowns. I was also grateful for the new faces in our region that we connected with purely because zoom made things more accessible.

This March it's not the rain that's giving relief but the opening up our creative and cultural venues.
The return of the Upstream Festival of Art & Culture certainly feels like a good way to get out and celebrate as well as the multitude of other events including live music, theatre and exhibitions across the region during the month especially over the March long weekend for Victoria.

We hope March continues to see the regeneration of our creative and cultural industries and activities and we'd love to hear from you about your events, ideas and news.

Happy Autumn!

Murray Arts is Reading

Cathy Goes to Canberra
Doing Politics Differently
by Cathy McGowan

Book review
By Alyce Fisher

This book falls outside the realm of an ‘arts’ book but with is roots in North East Victoria, community spirit, the true story of the underdog and the harsh reality of present Australian politics, we thought it deserved a review in the Murray Arts newsletter.
The story of the Independent political party from regional Australia, who triumphs to turn a safe seat, into a marginal seat, by running a campaign which was grounded by listening to the community, is not one of legends, it is fact and Cathy McGowan’s memoir of this incredible feat is honest, heartbreaking, and inspiring.
Living in the North East of Victoria, we can be a little flippant about what the Indi party has achieved but delving into Cathy’s stories and insights it reminds us just how monumental the initial campaign was. Cathy reminds us that ‘if not now, then when’ and ‘if not me, then who’. Her story, the story of Indi, our story as the community of the North East of Victoria, really is amazing, we can be a little dismissive as we live & breathe it every day and it has well and truly become our norm since Helen Haines succeeded Cathy in keeping Indi Independent.
If you need to be inspired to get involved in your community, if you want to get some insight into modern Australian politics and if you want to read a candid memoir then this is the book for you. Ultimately it is just a great story, by a great storyteller and I for one count myself lucky that it is a story about the region that I call home.
