When you stand on the top of a sand dune, you notice the sand runs continuously forming new lines and marks in the landscape, you can feel the earth moving”

Central Arrernte artist Stephen Berger now lives in Albury, NSW. Through his paintings, he investigates his intimate recollections of the desert landscapes of Alice Springs and surrounds. His disciplined practice of repetitious mark making is meditative and technical; in this, however, can be found a sense of reprieve and lightness engulfing the observer into his contemplative world.

How does the NE Victoria region come into your work?
Since living here I've been thinking about the Murray. Snaking around and muddy brown. I think about it, and I think I'll paint it one day.
