Public Art
Workshop and
Public Forum - What Makes Good Public Space |
Public Art Workshop
In July 2008, 17 Local Government representatives participated in
a workshop with internationally reknown public art specialist Pamille
Berg. Pamille has been responsible of managing public art commissions
to (new) Parliament House, the Australian National Botanic Gardens,
Canberra School of Music, State Library of South Australia, Maui
Arts and Cultural Centre and the Willoughby City Council (Sydney)
Cultural Precinct.
The Workshop covered ideas such
as 'What is public art?' 'What does it mean for local government
to develop a policy and proper processes for public art?' 'Who needs
to be involved in the commissioning processes for artists?'
The day was a big success with
participants inspired by the role of the artist in developing public
spaces.
Public Space Forum
In conjunction with AlburyCity Council, Murray Arts presented a
half day forum featuring guest speakers on the topic 'What makes
good public space'.
To concide with the redevelopment
of QE11 Square, the forum featured three guest speakers each discussing
their area of expertise relating to public space. The guest speakers
were:
Pamille Berg - Public Art
John Montgomery - Cultural Quarters
Mary Jeavons - Play in public space

Month in
the Country - My Darling Patricia Puppetry Workshop |
Four
Artists from the group ‘My Darling Patricia’ recently
ran a puppetry workshop with 20 year 2/3/4 & 5 pupils from Wooragee
Primary School. Artists Sam Routledge, Clare Britton, Katrina Gill
and Halcyon McLeod were in the region taking part in the ‘Month
in the Country’ Artists in Residence Program.
During the workshop, the group introduced
three different puppets that they had brought along and demonstrated
how they could be used - either with one operator/actor or two actors
together. These puppets were a hand puppet fox, an animal puppet
Goose, and a Japanese style Bunraku puppet girl.
The group then showed students a few
simple paper puppets that could be made using paper plates, newspapers
and masking tape. The students worked for 20-30 minutes making a
puppet. Once the puppets were completed the students participated
in a puppet parade in groups of 2-4.
The student’s puppets ranged from
aliens with chopsticks, to a ‘Food Chain’ – where
each successive puppet ate the next one! The creativity of the students
impressed both the Artists and us here at Murray Arts.
The workshop was a great way
for the students to explore the art of puppet making, and was a
fun morning for both students, teacher Michelle and the four Artists.
Special thanks to the Border Mail and students Maisie Walker Stelling
and Lachlan Trenery for permission to use the photo.
