A Murray Experience by Abi Thompson

What do you love most about living and working in the Murray region?

We love working and living in the Murray region because of the community and its environment. The North East has a great climate and holds its own with a strong Arts community.

How did the Umberella Collective come to together?

The Umberella was first proposed as a community project, conceived with many skills and ideas in mind.

Where did the idea for a Collective come from?

It seemed like a great way to capitalise on the Gallery space adjoining HotHouse Theatre and also to provide affordable handmade gifts to visitors and locals.

A cultural grant from City of Wodonga was successful with the express purpose of promotion and publicity to give the group a start. Umberella is part of a six month pilot program to gauge support from the community, with partnership support from Murray Arts, Creators Art Space Gallery and Wodonga Council, giving the collective the financial, cultural and promotional support for artists to showcase their work.

The Art Life

What would be the Umberella Collective's dream project?

The Umberella dream project would be to involve more artists in developing quality handmade product. Hopefully we could find an affordable option to continue selling to the public in a permanent home. Umberella could become a registered training authority and provide skills and income to market product.

Umberella Collective Artists

Abi ThompsonMy garments of revamped/ recycled vintage have been one of the main attractions during the summer period. My colours and textures are lively, and there are many textile mediums to choose from.

Leanne O'Toole has a colourful collection of neckties, wraps & jewellery. Leanne's style is still developing organically in both soft & hard mediums-the one common thread is that it is all wearable.

Robyn White has concentrated on producing a range of fun, funky & bright handmade resin jewellery.

Ann Collins has a selection of Artworks consisting of watercolours, acrylic on canvas & collage.

Melanie Ruth has a range of handmade cards (centred on the Year of the Horse) and luggage tags.

'Umberella Collective' is open from 10am- 4pm Tuesday - Friday @ Creators Art Space, Gateway Village.
